The progress of the Caterpillar Inc. project near Athens, Ga. was featured in Construction Equipment Guide. The new Caterpillar facility will manufacture small track-type tractors and mini hydraulic excavators. Gray, which is ranked third among the top U.S. green contractors in manufacturing plant construction, began work on the project on March 12, 2012 and the initial production at the facility is expected to begin in late 2013.
Gray is working on a very fast schedule on the 127-acre site. The already aggressive earthwork schedule has been accelerated by three weeks resulting in ninety-eight percent of the work being complete in an eight-month span. At the peak of the job, Gray will easily have 400 to 500 construction workers on site.
The equipment being utilized on the jobsite is manufactured by Caterpillar except for a crawler crane and aerial lifts. This is notable since this type of equipment is typically too large to use on sites other than heavy civil projects. However, the magnitude of this site is ideal for these large pieces of equipment.
This is Gray’s second project for Caterpillar. Gray recently completed an 850,000-square-foot design-build manufacturing plant for Caterpillar in Winston-Salem, N.C. that will manufacture surface mining truck axles.
Gray has built numerous projects in Georgia for customers including Academy Sports + Outdoors; Amazon.com; Johnson Controls; Procter & Gamble and Sherwin-Williams. The nationally ranked engineering, design and construction firm currently has several large projects, mostly located across the South, that are underway or recently completed including nine projects for Volkswagen on their Chattanooga, Tenn. campus; a Siemens gas turbine plant in Charlotte, North Carolina; a Whirlpool plant in Cleveland, Tenn.; and multiple projects for Austal USA in Mobile, Alabama.
