Ahead of Schedule

The 792,063 s.f. facility manufactures Michelin’s Earthmover tires, used in various mining operations around the globe. Some tires stand just over 13′ tall and weigh up to 5.5 tons, with 80% of the tires exported, primarily through the Port of Charleston. Although this project was a very technically complex project, the final certificate of occupancy from the county was distributed 50 days ahead of schedule. This marked the fastest greenfield construction project in Michelin’s history.

In the process of achieving this project in record time, Gray was met with a number of challenges, perhaps the most pressing of which was South Carolina’s worst rainfall in 40 years. However, thanks to the project team’s planning and goal setting, the Gray team was able to stay on track, despite the setbacks, and achieve the aggressive schedule.

The facility is adjacent to Michelin’s rubber processing plant expansion, another Gray project. Some 500 jobs were created for the Anderson, S.C. region as a result of both projects.

Michelin now has nine manufacturing facilities in the state of South Carolina, with this plant marking the company’s 19^th in North America.
