Gray's Emerging Leaders Group Partners with Common Good to Fund Community Construction
Common Good Lexington has been working with neighborhood youth and families in the community since 2011. The faith-based, non-profit organization hosts students in after school and summer programs and also works with their graduates in post high school pursuits. Common Ground’s mission includes recreation, education, leadership development and spiritual formation.
In the spring of 2016, a group of young boys recognized the demand for a space to play soccer in the neighborhood. They raised money, petitioned city council and were granted a tennis court to turn into a futsal court. Futsal is a 5-on-5 small-sided indoor soccer game played on a hard-surfaced, basketball-sized court with a smaller, heavier low-bounce ball. The court opened for play in the spring of 2017 and was so well-loved that the prototype quickly became in need of repair in order to make it a safe place for the youth to continue playing there.
Supporting the renovation of the futsal court is where Gray’s Emerging Leaders Group (ELG) saw an opportunity to support the local community. The students needed support in raising the funds necessary to repair and paint the surface, install durable goals and demo the fencing; and the Gray family chose to assist their fundraising efforts by sponsoring events with local businesses. Each of the businesses involved in these events generously contributed a percentage of their earnings to Common Good.
For the first fundraiser, ELG sponsored an event at West Sixth Brewery with Big Ass Fans and raised nearly $1,000 for the organization, not including online donations.
ELG team members removed the existing plywood walls at the futsal court, decreasing the overall cost of the project drastically.
The next event will take place in Lexington’s Distillery District at Goodfellas Pizzeria on July 29th from 2:00-6:00 p.m. A portion of the event’s proceeds will go toward the Castlewood futsal court fundraiser. Please join us toward this worthy cause!
We would like to extend special thanks to all who have joined these efforts to support this great cause, and we ask that you consider joining in this commitment to the Lexington community by donating to the Castlewood Futsal Fund.
If you are unable to attend the event yet still feel led to donate, do so here.
